more amish news!!
Y'all thought i was kidding last week when i posted something about that Amish e-commerce site (dedicated to energy-free lving and cool tools). Jokes on you! It seems more and more people are looking at the Amish for some eco-sanity in these "interesting" times ...So a recent article from the post Gazette focusses on how there are Amish who are forced to join us normals ...but won't do it in a dirty polluting way... So they're tinkering with alternative energies. including this:

as you know, my fav. tech, the Stirling Engine (this one runs off the heat from your hand... seriously. They are available for purchase from nonAmish websites, this is just their version)

i love it. think we can learn quite a bit from these people (aside form the cool beards!)

I went with my inlaws to see the "AY-mish" (as they call them in their Queens accent) in Pennsylvania, and I have to say what I saw suprised me. I was expecting cowed backwards people and (being a feminist) I was also expecting a severe inequality between men and women rising from a lack of opportunity in an agri-society. Gladly that is NOT what I witnessed. I saw attractive healthy people. No one was fat (except our tour guide who was a "fallen" Amish). Women drove their own buggies (unescorted), men were big and in shape (mmmm, farm boys). Yeah the beard is a little quirky but just seems like a fashion choice. It means they are married which in my book is waaay better than a ring to stop cheating.... Women are "required" to wear a little hat but it was such a dainty and pretty piece of white starched lace that I wanted one (the opposite of a heavy black chador). Crops were encredibly green on an all organic diet, and horses looked so cute and fat and happy....

It's sad that tourism is a new industry for them, but they are tolerating it and thriving! The Amish population has doubled since the 1960s.

WOW. Ladies and Gentlemen... this is the ubertalented Holly Daggers that i have told y'all about... Holly I am sooo glad you are peeping through! This is my home-away-from-home (and my means so i dont overfill our beloved VJF with nonVJ stuff)

wow. fit, healthy happy looking peopel(!) wonder if it has something to do with the whoelsome diet, hard work and no ho-ho's ( i mean the twink kind-- oh jeez-- JUNK FOOD! (get your mind out of the gutter!) Too bad they are so retrograde that the rest of america can't respect them, heh heh....

teh only prob. with teh beards as a way to say, mark that one is married.... well what do you do when you go to a bar and want to hide that fact? sure you can shave it off but you will have a lot of explaining to do later..... (way easier to slip a ring into a pocket) i know i know, no bars... no problem....

i think it would be dope if more americans realized how kewl the amish really are... maybe we gotta get some nyc designers to do some faux amish stylings in their clothes.. that and maybe a keanu reeves vehcile about an amish heroe(?)

thanks for the eye witness report Holls!!

.......Mmmmmm farmboys!
