On sale this year! portable mini fuel cells good for...um, well good!
LGLG
in todays edition of JoongAng Daily (what, like you don't read it?) there's a great little interview with Yeo Jong-kee, president of LG Chem, a division of Life's Good (I love that name!!). He is all gushing about his new portable fuel cell that will be on the market before year's end. While it is about 1/4 the size of a laptop (so still a few models away from replacing the pack in your lappy) the device will sell for around $500, supply you with 10 hours continuous computing (or 40hrs of mp3 fun?) and can be recharged at the very least around 400 times... and all you need to feed it is a shot of alcoho-- well methanol. This is just one of many portable fuel cells coming down the pipe: obviously there's Voller (as we have discussed before) and even a new Canadian portable.. and my personal fav. the fuel cell handicam: Image hosted by TinyPic.com.
So, now i gotta say, they are still baby steps, but my my my
aren't these baby steps looking like fun!

seems like i always roll doubles ...never just one groovy story about fuel cells, always a pair! and check this one out! big news!! this little gizmo is now street legal!
Image hosted by TinyPic.com
That's right! this is a 5KW fuel cell made by Kingston's Fuel Cell Technologies. and guess what they did yesterday? they got certified with the "ANSI/CSA America FC1- 2004 standard" so, this fuel cell stack, which produces enough juice for two homes, is now legal. You can put this baby in your basement and use it 24/7 without the need for all the complicated red tape! No special permits, no inspectors (who have never seen a fuel cell before, but still regulate them) ...no nothing! just plug & play...

just in case you are wondering, it is a solid oxide fuel cell (Solid oxide fuel cells have a solid metal oxide as the electrolyte. They function at the highest temperature of the different types of fuel cell (about 900-1000°C) and can reform most fuels internally)... which means no messy methanol.

ok, so now what is the excuse again??

from the people who brought you the Ferrari... here's e-solex
Image hosted by TinyPic.com
..you might have been awestruck by the beauty of the Yamaha FC Scoot i posted about 10 days ago.. but call me fickle, i have fallen for this! The Pinfarina eSolex (ok the name isn't that hot but no worse than FcMe, right? Wait this is a total aside-- but did Yamaha really call their vehicle "FcMe"?? Are we supposed to pronounce that phonetically?? Maybe it's just Fuel Cell MEthane but sounds a little needy imho)

So anyway, no date set on sales, but it's debut is Sunday at the Paris' International Two Wheel Show, and while i love it's look, I gotta say its pretty superficial my love, as it has only one seat, can only go 30km between charges and top speed of 35KmH. My old flame,long-term SWAP was able to go 50Km on a charge, i took it up to a shaky 65KmH and had two seats... here's a pic (tho mine was white) swappy while it wasn't nearly as HOT, she was a rocker! Sadly, we split when the police noticed that my experimental license plate had expired about 2000km ago, and took her away.... so now i am looking at this ferrari of a scooter and thinking it would be great to have one... but even better with a double seat (do you have any idea how romantic it is to drive around in a silent(as in you can converse while driving, unlike a Vespa), green vehicle when you have to hold tight?)
