under$100 laptop made specifically for kids ready to roll out!
...a good friend, somerled mentioned this yesterday and it has me all giddy. What a feel-good story! (and what's better than a feel good story with a green angle?). So here's the story; Professor Nick Negroponte over at MIT's media lab has developed a light, rugged and cheap laptop for kids. His non-profit org; One Laptop Per Child pretty much sums up what he wants to do. And it's happening, OLPC plans on churning out 15 million of 'em this year! They're mostly going to go to kids in Egypt, Brazil, China and other developing countries, but Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is already working on getting 500,000 for all the highschool and elementay students in his domain. They are going to be USB/Wifi everything a kid needs.... i think it looks like this: . So, the green part, you ask? is it going to be made with that funky bioplastic like fujitsu? One can only hope... but here is something that it is going to do; it's made with a hand crank for electricity (backup, they call it, but really if you had one, would you use the crank for "backup"?). Think Freeplay with email. personally i can't see enough hand cranked dynamos.. they now can power your cell, your tv remote, i think they generate more juice than one of those cute new solar backpacks... and how cute is this going to be ...all these little kids cranking up their lappys? like i said; f-e-e-l g-o-o-d s-t-o-r-y! |
