dispel the myths

Are you looking for artillery for your next argument with a Nuclear Energy proponent? The ones who say the only way to deal with climate Change is with "clean renewable nuclear energy?" Well, look no further! New Zealand's Scoop Magazine has laid out all the facts you need to know (and wish you didn't).
plant
They have the low-down on GhG emissions from Nukes (sure the reactor may not emit CO2 but, um, mining that uranium? Please. It takes a lot of energy to run that kind of circus! And CO2 is not the only GhG that will be emitted, those "clean energy" producers emit a lot of CFCs as well (Montreal protocol or not..) Not only that, but the amount of uranium we have is finite. They say it will last 50 years if we don't build any more plants. Obviously if we start building more of these things all over the place, that 50 will drop rapidly, and then we'll just have to deal with Peak-Uranium or something.... Not to mention waste, contamination and the like:
blinky
The article isn't all negative either, in the article they quote RMI )Amory & Hunter Lovins amazing org) who have found that every dollar invested in energy efficiency displaces 6.8 times more carbon than the same investment in nuclear power. There's muey mas goodies out there, so read on....

Natuer Spys [Jan. 20th, 2006|02:01 pm]
get up close and personal with some of our fellow Earthlings
jumpers
So there's this awesome blog out there called Nature Spies and you gotta go check it out! Kevin from Singapore stared the site, as he says, cause he's always asking what the name is of the animal or insect he just photographed. And continues; "Hence my inspiration for this project. If the project would have a more serious name as perhaps like in a scientific journal, it would be called. "A visual record of the flora and fauna of Singapore Island with geographical and temporal data" but of course that’s quite a mouthful and typically dry. Hence I decided to call this blog ‘Nature Spies’ in appreciation to the avid nature photographers who are shooting up a storm every weekend risking malaria and dengue and take only pictures away from our nature reserves." And it's apparently gaining speed, as more and more macro world photographers vie for space and NatureSpy accolades.... The Heavy Jumpers up there are from a fellow Singaporean named Tchuanye and you can even buy them at his gallery called SmugMug

earthship update: THE earthship mansion is up for sale!
DW
I just heard recently that Gunsmoke Star Dennis Weaver's earthship mansion is for sale... OK it might be a bit pricey for some of us, but it is a beaut! Sitting on 20 Colorado acres, (shared with wild geese, llamas and some deer) this has got to be the largest earthship on the planet. It's over 10,000 sqft, full food growing capabilities, huge winding (tin can matrix) staircase... and obviously, stays warm all winter and cold all summer! And yeah $3.5M might be more than you & I can afford at the moment, but check it out, it's still impressive what can get done!

And Weaver's no slouch, he doesn't just have an earthship, he's also been quite active in getting the good word out there.....

The whales in Whales strains mainly in the Thames [Jan. 20th, 2006|02:54 pm]

Sure, a cute pic of that British Whale... but then some sobering news
whalethames
IntuitiveMotion posted something very heavy in the Soldiers of Good that everybody ought to read... it appears that a government investigator studying the stranding of 37 whales on the North Carolina coast last year changed her draft report to eliminate all references to the possibility that naval sonar may have played a role in driving the whales ashore.
