Lightworks and Gaiam Announce Home Video Partnership [Feb. 18th, 2006|09:40 am]
[Tags|, , ]

....but which Lightworks is that??
LW
Lightworks Program Distribution (LPD) just announced a new home video partnership with GT Media, Inc. (a subsidiary of mega-huge greenies Gaiam). This marks the company's first home video deal, and comes on the heels of the company's recent launch. Through the agreement, GT Media will have long term home video distribution of Lightworks Program Distribution's full catalogue of programming throughout North America. Lynn Powers, President and CEO, Gaiam, stated, "we are very excited to work with Lightworks Program Distribution. Their high-quality, values-driven programming is a perfect complement to our library of products that enlighten and enhance people's lives."

Now here's where it get's confusing. LPD is based in NYС and are purveyors of Faith & Values based media. Which kinda fits into the Gaiam fold, almost. What I am confused about is that there is the far superior and far more fitting LightWorks Audio & Video based on that crazy roller-beach in LA (Venus Beach?)You want videos on Alternative Healing? Alternative Energy? Dolphins? Gurus? Yoga? Tantra? Sacred Geometry? You ain't gonna find it over at LPD (who sell stuff like Joan of Ark, and "The American Creed")... so that's why I am confused... do you think Gaiam was confused as well and signed a deal with the wrong label? Well it's too bad that Lightworks (AV not LPD) wont be in Gaiams' ginormous distribution chain, I mean, they are everywhere, Borders, Chapters, Powell, Amazon, WalMart... it would be amazing if anyone and everyone had access to gems like these:
bucky ZP
(oh well, better luck next time Gaiam..)

say hellooo to the bamboo zoo [Feb. 18th, 2006|10:15 am]

lestercateaglelastone
Their first (of many) book just got released. Hopefully, to make a great impact on kids everywhere.... So say hi to the Bamboo Zoo! Bamboo Zoo is focused on writing and publishing children’s books that are centered on teaching messages of health: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual, and to make responsible, healthy decisions for themselves and for the planet with the help of Lester Panda and his friends; a turtle who teaches yoga, a recycling eagle and a host of other cute animals...

Along with the books, an interactive CD-ROM and website have been created to enhance the children’s learning experience. Bamboo Zoo is a joint effort of Kim Eickhoff, Renee Eickhoff, and Dustin Resch. The idea came out of talking about dreams and wishes and how to combine their talents and make a difference in the world. Kim is the health and wellness expert, Renee is the writer and teacher, and Dustin is the illustrator - and together they make up Bamboo Zoo.

[ok i do have a few crits; the tshirts and hoodies are non-organic and made with polyester and there's no indication that the books are printed on tree-free paper... guys you gotta up the notch a little....]

Second helpings for Konarka (the solar plastic guys) [Feb. 18th, 2006|10:43 am]

tent
OK, in the non-Solar-Grade-Silicon solar world, Konarka is a hottie. Not only do they make the PV for solar tents, ski jackets and other non-traditional solar applications, but they are smart. They managed to take over Siemens' organic photovoltaic research activities, as well as its renowned scientific team. They've really carved a niche for themselves with their funky solar ribbons,
ribbon
and now it seems, for the second time in but a few years, they have made nice friends in the investment community. With the help of 3i, a world leading venture capital and private equity firm, and existing investors, including Draper Fisher Jurvetson, New Enterprise Associates, Good Energies, Vanguard Ventures, Partech International and Chevron Technology Ventures, they just raised $20 Million dollars. I mean it's not a huge shock, they have unique technologies, are way forward moving, and of course have already gone through about $40M, so hey, they're on a roll.....

...I almost wanna go back to school!!! [Feb. 18th, 2006|11:07 am]

YSOA
A new advanced degree program that puts a green spin on architectural design will be offered at Yale University next fall. The four-year joint degree program will focus on sustainable and restorative environmental design, which seeks to minimize adverse effects on the natural environment and human health and enhance the beneficial contact between people and nature in buildings. “Much of current design and development, especially in urban areas, has fostered environmental degradation, excessive waste, pollution and unsustainable resource use, while at the same time separating, if not alienating, people from the natural environment,” said Stephen Kellert, the Tweedy Ordway Professor of Social Ecology at the environment school. Students in the 126-credit program will take 90 course credits at the architecture school and 36 credits at the environment school, and upon graduation will receive master's degrees in architecture and environmental management.

“Schools of the environment are recognizing that they must also strive to be schools of sustainable development, and schools of architecture are recognizing that they need to address the biological and biophilic dimension of sustainable design,” said Kellert. “Consequently, students of the environment and of architecture are increasingly seeking to integrate and combine the knowledge and skills of these currently separate and independent disciplines, so that they may someday shape built environments that will sustain people and the planet. Can I get an amen?" (OK, he didn't say that last part).

I never really thought of The Yayo as cutting edge eco, but I have high hopes... Sure they don't have an Ambasz or a Yeang on the Archi faculty, but it's Yale, they can hire.... Besides they do have Gustav "Gus" Speth as the dean of the eco school(!)
GUS
That is pretty heavy. I gotta say, I've had the pleasure of being in Mr. Speth's company (with his pal, Maurice Strong, I mean those two are amazing!) and he is a unique person in this field! You don't even need to take a course just being near him you get it by osmosis! From 1993 to 1999, "Dean Speth" served as administrator of the United Nations Development Programme and chair of the UN Development Group. Prior to that, he was founder and president of WRI the World Resources Institute; professor of law at Georgetown University; chairman of the U.S. Council on Environmental Quality; and senior attorney and cofounder, Natural Resources Defense Council. With Gus in on it, I have high hopes for the school of architecture's new Green Building progarm at Yale! Yay!

conference news [Feb. 18th, 2006|11:31 am]

OK there are only like, a thousand green conferences happening nowadays... (with problems like these.... life's pretty LG). Still, EnvironDesign 10 at Toronto's National Tade Center (April 25, 26, 27) sounds like a winner. And not just 'cause I'm here, because I would have traveled here for a show like this (then again, i get in for free, media and all... so maybe that doesn't count)!

Aside from great lectures and panel discussions, there will be tours of prefab and oldschool green buildings, a Stephen Peck "GreenRoofs 101" Workshop, and workshops with the following brilliant people, David W. Orr!!, Tom Haynes, David Gottfried, Alison Kinn Bennett, Henning Bloech , my pal Jillian Hovey, Huston Eubank, Jenifer Seal Cramer, Barbra Batshalom, Chandrashekhar Prabhu, Steve French, Dan Pink, Nellie Cheng, Steven Baumgartner Jayson Antonoff, Carl E. Smith, Joel Ann Todd, Jean-Pierre Simard , Robert Zimmerman, Dru Meadows, and Bill Walsh to name a few....

like I said, at this point there are thousands of green conferences around the planet but this is going to be a heavy one!!!

Ok, this one looks a little iffy, but if you wanna see some red-faced public officials trying to make heads or tails of an issue that tears them up a hundred different ways, then you gotta head out to "Connecting The Dots", sponsored by "California's Climate Action Registry (CAR)," some emission traders, energy companies and I'm sure a lobbyist or two....
CAR
The Registry's annual conference "brings together thought leaders on climate change to take a hard look at developing climate policies, standards and trends. Over 200 policymakers, businesses, academics and NGOs from across the globe will gather at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort in Southern California for this two day event that focuses on giving you a complete understanding of the climate programs being built in the world around us and helping you successfully navigate your organization's course into the future." So if you are concerned about your organization's navigation through the coming climate change um, issues, well by all means go! I'll be the guy making fun of you!
