Straight From The Foxes Mouth
Thanks to babynutcase for yet one more peak oil tip. And wow. it's from Fox News (i really liked their first sloagn "we report, you decide" better than the F&B, but w/e): The Headline is "Global Oil Production May Peak Soon." Here's a tidbit:
Once we reach this tipping point, known as "Hubbert's Peak," also known as "peak oil," global oil production will begin an irreversible decline and less oil will be available with every passing year, scientists say. Energy experts no longer debate about whether Hubbert's peak will occur, but when. On this point, estimates vary wildly. Kenneth Deffeyes, a professor emeritus at Princeton University, believes it has already happened — in late 2005.
Wow. Just like with climate change; the crazies who (10 years ago) were saying we have about 20 years left are now joined in chorus by the likes of Hansen et al, all the experts, who now say that there's about 10 years left. And now with Peak oil, the crazies like Deffeyes (a student of Marrion King Hubbert), are being joined by the experts, and now people are taking it seriously. Is it human nature to ignore all the harbingers until you get smacked in the face with a brick wall? I know if I was driving a car, and the passenger tells me that there's a brick wall stopping the road in another 100 meters, I would at the very least slow down a bit to see if there is any validity. I wouldn't get Hannity & Combs to call the passenger an idiot and a tin-foil hatter. And now that it looks inevitable here comes the press to tell us a new discovery! Gee, thanks. Thanks for ignoring decades of information that didn't serve your purpose. Again like climate, what frightens me is that if they are telling is this now, then it must really be around the corner... |

somewhere to eat during the ExtraOrdinary Technology (free energy machines...)Conference
Might have to take some of the free energy freaks on over to Omar Abou-Ismail and Cara Bracken's Living Cuisine. Just read about the Salt-Lake City place here, and it sounds awesome: ""The people that work here are very loving, and we work to help people, to educate people, to make people aware," Abou-Ismail said. "We are here to do nothing but show complete acceptance with no judgment and complete love no matter who they are." Corbin White, 29, is one of Abou-Ismail's regular customers. He first came to the Living Cuisine in August. "The second I saw it, I just pulled in here and I knew it was for me because at the time I was vegan so I was thinking a little bit more about the way I ate," White said. Abou-Ismail "asked me the first time I was here if I was raw, and I said, 'I am now,' " White said, noting he loves the taste of the food. "His food is absolutely world class. I just decided right then and there that there was no sense in ever destroying my food with heat again." (and the prices? for organic raw food?? $5-15! Wow). greenjenni are you listening?? Go go go! |

| ADM supermarket to the gas tank, extrusion plant, bioChem factory, and um... world (?) |
[Apr. 29th, 2006|08:10 am] |
The Andreas reign is over. New ADM CEO is an Oil woman. What could this mean??
Say hello to Patty Woertz. She's the new CEO of Archer Daniels Midland. ADM is a huge company and their products are in so many products on a supermarket shelf, that if you thought about it your head would spin. Now I was never a fan of ADM founder Dwayne "sleezy" Andreas, and I'm not the only one. But every dark tunnel has a light at the end of it, and Patty might just be that light (Well one can hope). See ADM is a food company, They make corn syrup for soda-pop and food-relief packages, and well, pretty much cornered the corn and (non organic) soy markets so long ago that it's hard to find a conventional farmer who doesn't have a relationship with the "Supermarket to the World." But this appointment, Mrs. Woertz, is a new angle and definitely a glimmer of hope. Maybe. While I am hoping that she will come to terms with alternatives to chemical fertilizer, like rock dust in particular, that isn't where the glimmer comes from.
See Mrs. Woertz used to work in the oil industry. In fact she was executive vice president of Chevron before becoming President of Chevron Canada. She's an oilman. So whats an oil (wo)man doing running a corn stand? three words: bioplastics, ethanol & biodiesel.
See, this maybe good. Sure, this may end up being a HUGE boondoggle (remember there's someone else from Chevron who is seriously fucking the world up right now, they even named a tanker after her) But I'm hoping that this is a good sign. A woman who understands feedstocks (like plastic ones, not like feeding corn to pigs) and who knows how much power this woman can yield. Besides, it's not like Cargil's NaturworksPLA is so hot! And the demand for these materials at the moment is still huge as compared to the supply. So who knows? It may be a god thing after all...

So you say you wanna get into the EV business....
Well if you are serious about wanting to get in, the first things you will have to ask yourself are, what niche can you fill? Where is there room? and of course what is needed? And you can find all of these out.. you can go to Yokohama in October for EVS22 and you can lock yourself up in your tower and surf the web till your eyes bleed. But if you really want the upper hand, this is the guy you have to listen to:
Dr. Peter Harrop. You can say he's the E.F. Hutton of the electric vehicle industry. And he is worth listening to. In fact he's worth the $2200 that it would cost for you to get his awesome book
It dishes out all the info on the $31 Billion dollar industry, including who are the biggest, who are the brightest, and what is on the horizon. Seriously, I've had the opportunity to sit & chat with Dr. Harrop, and hear him speak publicly. You won't find a more comprehensive analysis of the industry (which is expected to grow seven-fold in the next ten years). So if you really want to know what's going on.... Check out his Electric Vehicle Forecasts, Players, Opportunities 2005-2015. You'll be amazed at what's happening in the world of EVs. |

...he's out sewing seeds
So Last November it was reported that hemp acreage had tripled in Canada to a whopping 24,000 acres. And back then Manitoba (King of Canadian hemp) was growing about 12,000 of those acres. Well, the word from the Manitoba Co-Operator it appears that this summer will see 30,000 acres planted in Manitoba alone! |

Respect Your Elders!
Don't get me wrong: i'm glad that the MSM is starting to embrace green thinking, but i take umbrage at some of the things being said in the most recent "Green" Wired magazine. And I can't believe that it was written by Alex WorldChanging Steffan. Jeezuz!

CMHC's new NZEHH Program for net zero energy homes
Apparently the CMHC just unveiled a Net Zero Energy Healthy Housing (NZEHH) Program! They'll give $50,000 grants for a dozen multi-disciplinary teams to design and build zero-energy demonstration homes (thats not a lot of money), comleted by June 2007. Builders must team up with architects, engineers and even municipal officials to qualify for the grants. The zero-energy program aims to create homes that will have no impact on air, land and water. The homes will have passive heating and cooling, they'll be flooded with natural daylight, will have on-site energy-generating systems, and must preserve water, land, and the natural habitat. I love the CMHC (Canadian Morgetage and Housing Comission, they once gave my team $30K to do an integrated design process for a green development. |

| still as Kewet as a Kewcumber.... |
[Apr. 29th, 2006|08:46 pm] |
I've written about them before, but they're just so darn cute!! I was just reading about the Kewet Buddy again, apparently they just built a new plant to manufacture more of them! Sadly, they won't be coming anywhere near here, they are only being marketed in Northern Europe(!) One of the reasons is that in Norway, when you buy a gas-powered car you pay 100% tax, but an EV you pay 0% tax :DDD on top of that if you drive an EV you don't have to pay tolls. Top speed of 90km and a range of either 50km (lead acid) or 150km (LiIon). I love these!!
