moot
exuberant pantaphobia refuses to get on the bandwagon
Well... all week long there has been talk about Katarina and Rita. Most ecoist are saying that it is proof positive that the greenhouse gasses create worse natural disasters. Most climatologist say that you cant look at any one event, no matter how freaky, and determine that it is or isn't greenhouse induced. Sure there is the odd climatologist who has decided to speak out-- just like there are some still on the oil-dole (global climate coalition members ought to be thrown into The Tombs and have the key tossed into a 3D climate model-- they have done nothing to help the situation) And i guess, while people are out there suffering, i just didn't want to get involved.. capitalizing on human misery is not my forte.
So I've been keeping my mouth shut, and watching the battle rage on the frontlines: over at RealClimate.com there has been the longest ever comment thread related directly to this question. And after 270 comments i have concluded that you can not conclude anything from this form of debate. It's funny to watch, but funny oh-oh not funny ha-ha.
If you've been reading my blog for any amount of time you know what i think, and if you've done your homework, you probably know where we are at-- geologically-- so what i think i am going to do over the next few weeks is push the 'ol envelope a little further 'north.' I mean lets drop this debate. to begin with you will never be able to PROVE something like this... so can we leapfrog the issue? Instead of playing that tired old record, about how we can't tell what will happen in a changed climate... why not lets refocus.
What are the known knowns (as opposed to the known unknowns, like the coming ice age)? We know that the hydrological cycle will be tweaked, perhaps beyond repair and definitely to the point where conventional agriculture will not feed us. We also are fairly certain that the sea level will rise between 3M and 12M. And there is ample proxy data saying that these things are starting to happen... so do we stand in the wind debating what flavor it is? or do we start to focus on adaptation? we have about 50 years of technologies to implement in the next 15. Are we up for it? do we have a roadmap? yes and yes! (and if you've been reading ExuPan then you know this already). So be forewarned there will be some new techs i've been keeping secret and some good old ones reappearing. The future can be amazingly bright! Tools & techs all waiting for us! It's about evolution baby! so, um, let's roll!
