"* The creative commons is all around us. Any creative mind reaches a point where it realises that its work is part of an ongoing cultural conversation.
* We are all the product of -- at the head of the notional genestream of -- generations upon generations of culture. We all take from what's around us to make our art. We engage in the conversation. Raise our voices. And we identify our voice with a copyright mark. That isn't some hideous, stultifying lock on the culture. The commons *is* the cultural conversation. You want to join in? Get up on your hind legs and do it. Get your own copyright mark. So the next person along knows that they have to speak for themselves and identify their voice, rather than using your words and pretending it's them.
* If the fact that Mickey Mouse will be under copyright control for the next thousand years really bugs you? Kill yourself. You're no use to me or anyone else. It's fun when things drop out of copyright, sure. But it's not *important* to the process of creation. I could easily cause to be created illustrations in the styles of penny dreadfuls and woodcuts to achieve the same hauntological effects. It's just a way to instantiate an idea. I'm not going to roll on the floor and curse Western society for a cultural jailer because it turns out someone still has the rights to the illustration for an old MR James story or something. The world is not broken because you can't make your own Mickey Mouse cartoons (and frankly, if you could, YouTube would already be broken under the weight of LOLMickeys and Mickey Mouse Buttsecks and WineMickeyMouse videos).
* If you really need some legal language to help yourself feel good about the state of being a 15 year old in an art class making a collage out of newspaper clippings... well, great. That was great fun when we were 15, right? But listen. The mark of being an adult is to internalise our influences and express them through our own personalities and filters. The last thing our culture needs is a licence to be 15 forever."

| Kids these days |
[May. 18th, 2008|04:40 pm] |
Went to MacDonalds and ordered a $1.49 cheeseburger. The clerk rang it up for a final total well over $2.50. When I observed that that seemed unlikely, he supported the case that it was $2.50+ by observing that that value was what the machine told him to charge. I was grumpy and would have ended the conversation by cancelling my order.
In the end, he figured out that he had punched the wrong button but it took the manager to straighten things out.
On the "the issue isn't "kids" but clerks - possibly tired clerks - who may be too dependent on their registers" front, I know that I also managed to completely derail a woman at a grocery store by handing her some extra coins after she rang in the value of bill I had given her. The idea was to make the change come out to a nicer value (non-penny containing) but the actual result was that she was terribly confused, couldn't work out the right change even with a calculator, and then took my word for what it was supposed to be. |

| Goldman-Sachs: Oil to Average $141/bbl in 2nd Half of 2008 |
[May. 18th, 2008|10:23 am] |
That means they think the high price by xmas will only be $150. Can we say wishful thinking? OPEC promised $200, 25% higher than GS's weak prediction. Of course, they're often wrong but this is a very conservative estimate. It would be nice if it only rose enough to average $141, but these are the same clowns that said oil would never reach $60, then never reach $80, then would collapse back to $30 but up and up it goes.
Article from Marketwatch.com.
Here in the REAL world, oil has been rising at around $3/week, sometimes $5. I've been hoping for a more modest $1.25/week rise in oil as that gives more time for adjustment, but no such luck. |

Problem debt 'hitting affluent'
A national debt advice organisation says its offices in some of the most affluent parts of the UK are being overwhelmed by demands for help.
It said demand for advice was rising across the country, but the increase was dramatic in middle-class areas.
In Haywards Heath in Sussex and Congleton in Cheshire, for example, there had been a 100% rise in inquiries over the past year.
Many of the people Transact sees have taken advantage of easy access to credit or extended mortgages to pay for home improvements or just general spending.
But in recent months lenders have become much tougher and less willing to be flexible over repayments.
And with fixed-rate mortgages coming to an end, higher fuel costs, food bills and council tax, it says many people with decent salaries are struggling. |

| Australia Should Expect Fuel Rationing Shock |
[May. 18th, 2008|07:39 am] |
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,23710412-952,00.html
Quoted from the Courier-Mail: Looming oil shortages would produce the biggest change in society since the industrial revolution, Sustainability Minister Andrew McNamara warned yesterday.
A report by Mr McNamara for state Cabinet on the impact of the fuel crisis is expected to include recommendations on rationing, the future of public and private transport and sustainable population issues.
"I think people are going to be in for a shock when they find it's too expensive to drive their cars to work and then, when they get down to the station, they find the train is full and they can't get on board," Mr McNamara said.
"I cannot overstate this – we need to adopt a wartime mentality," he said. "We're going to face a level of urgency that will require dramatic change."
Private car use was expected to trend towards hybrid vehicles and then to electric. "But will we have enough (electricity generating) capacity when everyone comes home and plugs their cars in to recharge?" he said.

| Earth Hour May and bi-weekly challenges |
[May. 18th, 2008|12:18 pm] |
Okay, so it seems people are keen to have our own Earth Hour, so after some thinking I'll suggest we have it on the last day of each month because hopefully that's easy to remember. I'll post a reminder entry the day before, and it would be great if people passed on the message, especially if they're a member of other environmental communities or have green-minded people on the f-lists. Thus, Earth Hour May will happen on Saturday the 31st, from 8-9pm local time. Once again, what you're encouraged to do is turn off all lights and electrical appliances during that hour (or longer if you wish, heh) to make a statement about climate change and our ridiculously inefficient use of energy resources. Here's the official Earth Hour site for anyone who wants more info.
I've figured out the challenges all the way until the end of august, too (thanks for the suggestions!). These are going to be 'Fortnight Challenges' and will start on sundays and end on saturdays; the first one will be posted on June 1st, and will end June 14th. Generally, the themes and challenges that will be posted span various aspects of sustainable or environmentally-conscious living. The reason it's a fortnight is because I felt that was enough time to encourage habits, but there will be more diversity in the given timespan (until the end of august at the moment) to keep people aware of just how many things we can do. What do you guys think?
Once again, thanks for your input! |
