Y'all thought i was kidding last week when i posted something about that Amish e-commerce site (dedicated to energy-free lving and cool tools). Jokes on you! It seems more and more people are looking at the Amish for some eco-sanity in these "interesting" times ...So a recent article from the post Gazette focusses on how there are Amish who are forced to join us normals ...but won't do it in a dirty polluting way... So they're tinkering with alternative energies. including this:
as you know, my fav. tech, the Stirling Engine (this one runs off the heat from your hand... seriously. They are available for purchase from nonAmish websites, this is just their version)
i love it. think we can learn quite a bit from these people (aside form the cool beards!) |

ok ok i know its somewhat incongruous, an Amish e-commerce site. but laugh all you want, i know that these guys (ok these guys with funny beards and buggies) are on to something we could all get in touch with; non-electric functionality. In these days of 1-Ton challenges (the canadian Milquetoast approach to meeting Kyoto), voluntary efficiency and rolling brownouts, picking up a few of the goodies available at Lehmans will not only help you save electricity and do the good planet thing.... it also may ensure you get to eat your supper on time....
Lehmans started off selling what you would expect;
 (BTW that's a Snath, not a Scythe) farm tools and simple things that make one's live on the land just a little bit easier, like this one-legged-stool
 of course, they have expanded to the wonderful world of non electric goodies of all sorts (power free food processors, hand-cranked blenders for camp-yard smoothies, bed heaters et al.) even veggie (i.e. non-rennet, not vegan, sorry) cheese making kits... they even have a whole wheatgrass sprout-making section (pretty fab for Amish dontcha think?)( Read more... ) |
