| what happened to Business Week |
[Feb. 8th, 2006|06:56 am] |
...the BW's shout outs make me wonder...
So over the past few months I have noticed more and more green stories coming from Business Week. And I gotta say i am curious. Ok, till now I would say that they are simply reporting on new business trends (well, "new" if you're an ostrich, or rip van winkle waking up). but now they're getting saucy, and so I have to ask, is there a new mandate here to slip something into the business man's consciousness? guilt and prodigal son-ness? or what?
Take today for example.. there's an article about NetSuite and their business management software "Dashboard." Maybe the editors though tit was kinda dry, so what do they do to spice it up?
They get into a narrative about Pittsburgh's LittleEarth the folks who make those groovy belts and bags made from pop bottle tops and old license plates! There's got to be hundreds of companies using dashboard. And i'm not complaining, I'm glad. But also curious.. what happened at BuisnessWeek? and who is now in charge... more to come.... |

| the junky pre-loved ecolos: on and on and on and on.... |
[Feb. 5th, 2006|03:09 pm] |
recycled junksmithing aesthetic hits the runways!
OK, it's no secret around Live Journal, that the coolest of the cool have taken (clothes) recycling and raised it to an artform! The kids don't necessarily have a political agenda or anything... they just dig what they're doing and as a good benefit, look hot! And there are pros doing this as well-- in Toronto there the group who did the above clothing. They're called PreLoved and in Montreal a similar but different group are called On and On Ecolo Chic (ok their name sucks but look how pretty):
But if you ask me, the absolute hottest of all is Junky Styling (and I thought On&On wasn't such a hot name...) ( Read more... ) |

| wow WOW WOW FINALLY!!!!! |
[Jan. 9th, 2006|08:04 pm] |
Thank you AL! best news of the day!!
 They're open for busines!!
I just read, thanks to AL the city hippy, that Vivavi just opened their doors! This is a momentus event! A "first" I am just so psyched about!! For anyone who doesn't know, Vivavi is the coolest shop around. They have the best selection of green furniture, accessories, and they even have a very transparent blog! Up to now it was online only, but now they have a showroom (the first of many to come i'm sure)! It's just outside Williamsburg (well, if you were the coolest store in the universe where would you be?) on the second floor of 644 Manhattan Ave. I can't wait to see it in the flesh and will most certainly reprt to y'all as soon as, but in the meantime... let's all give Vivavi's Josh Dorfman a HUGE round of applause.. and remember: he got there by doing it online first, so if you want to check out what he's all about, browse away... |

| to dwell in the ultimate optimum! |
[Nov. 24th, 2005|08:06 am] |
OK so these guys Ultimate Home Design just launched a press release about their new homes, soon to be built; The Optimum Performance Home. Shooting well beyond LEED this 4000sqft home comes with all the fixins; tankless water heaters, 5.7Kw solar array... but this is no Hippy House; it's even got a built-in rear-screen theatre. No pics yet (sorry, I tried) but it seems pretty snazzy, some nice architectural drawings on the site, and well, looks like someone just upped the ante a little in the green home business, way to go UHD! |

| fa fa fa fa fashion (la la la la) |
[Nov. 4th, 2005|04:34 pm] |
The word is out, all over town. Cliche as it already is, green = new black.
Two weeks ago in may favorite old-fashioned newspaper, FT, was gushing over green-stylee guru Danny Seo, and stated that; "decorating and style conventions are being blown down, and homes are being built back up meaner, leaner and greener." ...then toady in the SF Gate they say that "green is the trendy way to go!" and none of that is a surprise to anyone here. In fact, green consumerism has a funny tone to it.. but personally I liken it to cracks forming and letting the light seep in. As if we've been collectively cocooned while in our sleepwalking state, and now through lifestyle changes, we are actually morphing a culture, hence, unshackling the bonds. for me it's a harbinger, but of good things to come! So, in that light I would like to shine a little more on ya:
Meet Maki Hayazono. She's the designer for a company in Tokyo called Rourou (pronounced "lou-lou"). Last night, at Japan Fashion Week, Ms. Hayazono (who modeled for and studied with uberchic Yoji Yamamoto) launched her latest line, "the Lotus Room" (pictured below). And just in case you're wondering why i care about the Lotus Room collection... well, let's just look at 'em ...and use the keywords Hemp, Recycled Silk, and Elegance!

| solar purse.... ugly or HOT? |
[Oct. 13th, 2005|08:36 am] |
ok, so my friend Victoria-E says that these are just not pretty enough to catch on. especially in "fashion conscious new york" where she works as a model and eco-activist. Me, I don't really know what makes a purse hot-- it would seem (from all the people walking around)that some fake Ls and Vs is what makes one fetching, but I disagree:
I think these kick ass, and if a woman was standing on the corner with one of these i would just have to ask her.. I mean ok, so i got a little bias. But also know that Joe Hynek will one day be HUGE. He's been down on the farm, er, University of Iowa, designing this solar purse and it's now available in many sizes... perfect to charge a phone, digicam, MP3 playa.... w/e your needs. Now, Victoria may be right, they may have to up the looks as well as functionality, but i think they're smashing! |

| STATIC's got the goods! |
[Sep. 4th, 2005|12:18 pm] |
from POWER studios and Re:Form studios (both out of Sweden)STATIC! is Design for Increased Energy Awareness. They make stuff that investigates interaction design as a means of increasing people's awareness of how energy is used, and for stimulating changes in energy behavior. Revisiting the design of everyday things with a focus on issues related to energy use, they are developing a palette of critical design examples - prototypes, conceptual design proposals, and use scenarios. The coolest one i saw, but there are many more at the STATIC! website are these bathroom tiles:
What happens is that they are heat reactive... the longer you stay in the shower the less design is left on your tiles. I think that's neat. I mean, who would want to stay in a shower if they know that their bathroom is going to end up unsightly? |

| the continuing saga of the evolved business leader.... |
[Aug. 18th, 2005|11:46 am] |
here's another business leader, president of the Durst organization. If you don't know who he is, you will in a little while... he's the guy reshaping new york. not just the skyline... but the innards too
Meet Mister Douglas Durst (not the guy with the birthmark on his head). His dad was the guy who made the "national Debt Clock" in Times Square, and like father like son, Douglas Durst is now wearing his ideals on his sleeve and letting the fruits of his labours walk his talk. This is the guy who built "4 Times Square" the first building in Manhattan to be so green as to have it's own fuel cell generator! He is almost finished building a new green condo named after his daughter Helena (actually at this point no Durst Organization building happens without a green aspect to it). But the real kicker is going to be his hot One Bryant Park

| Finally I Know What To Buy Puffy/Diddy For His Next BDay bash: A Fuel Cell Powered Monohull Yacht! |
[Jan. 4th, 2005|10:18 am] |
don't know why this took so long to leak out... they launched the boat almost a year ago.... scheduled to be ramped up to production in '06 this is the worlds first Fuel Cell Yacht (and lord knows where the boats are there's lots of water to electrolyze-- just ask a submarine officer). According to FuelCellWorks, the yachts are made by a Mercedes subsidiary, and Ballard. Sounds like fun, can't wait to go water-skiing again (decided to never do it again until i can be skiing off electricity or a fuel cell.... ) can't wait.... and if you are a megabillionaire... finally, you don't have to be so gauche as to have to deal with "diesel" while enjoying the high seas and cote dazures.... |

| let's all raise a glass.... |
[Jan. 3rd, 2005|01:36 pm] |
....of solar wine, that is. According to the Lodi (California) News, the North Davis Road Vineyard, owned and operated by the (obviously) very bright David Lucas, is now maker of the world's first 100% solar powered wine. According to the article Lucas put 160 solar panels on top of the old barn he has converted to a winery, knows it will amortize in about a decade, and is not worried. The vines aren't going anywhere, he says. Actually Lucas is full of quotable gems, like how he describes the drive to go solar: "the vines have always been running on solar power, now I'll have a winery that runs on the sun." you gotta love his moxie. and a hearty cheers to that! |

| do want to look like a broken record.... |
[Dec. 29th, 2004|03:02 pm] |
pretty dern hip bowls available everywhere (+Xtracool recycling content)
that last entry was a little harsh-- so i thought i would lighten it up a bit with these loveley record-bowls. While DJ culture has certainly ressurected the 12" from its unjust demise (sorry but things just sound better on an oracle turntable), millions of records would have faced their sad march to the landfill, until Vinylux in New York began making these atractive bowls and many other cool products out of old records. I mean what else are you going to do with 1000 copies of Led Zepplin's IV but turn them into cool bracelets and beer coasters, or Billy Holliday Records into bowls ....Brilliant! They are available in person (if you happen to be in NYC) at mxyplyzyk (a sorta eco, way gizmo shop in the village) 125 greenwich ave or online everywhere from many peeps, including Vivavi and greenfeet |

| PV TV |
[Dec. 29th, 2004|09:10 am] |
Here's something i want to see AN AWFUL LOT MORE of in the coming year! Imagine if you will an office tower, where by day the plate-glass windows are semi-transparent solar cells (you can see out, like a tinted window) while it collects solar energy to help the buildings energy needs (i mean, this alone would be worth writing about..... office towers being transformed into energy generating plants!). And then at night, things turn even funkier! the same film that encases the Photovoltaics is also a great membrane for rear-screen projections. This essentially turns every plate-glass window into a movie screen by night (!) the potential for advertising is staggering, but i get even more giddy thinking about the visuals that some of my VJ friends do and imagining them blasted onto a 50 story building! Move over Bladerunner, we have a new architectural giant to contend with! ( from Japan's MSK Corporation ) |

| first of many? |
[Dec. 16th, 2004|09:21 am] |

My favorite building in the entire world THIS IS THE FUTURE !!!!!!!!!!!
Viridian Design the 1998 Speech that started a (design) revolution, even if most peoele are still relatively unaware
