global warming is an existential threat that should affect our approach to just about every issue. To take it seriously, we would have to change the way we think about transportation, agriculture, development, water resources, natural disasters, foreign relations and more.

Stanford Review pushes chemo-pluviforming the climate instead of actually doing anything positive... [May. 13th, 2006|01:12 pm]

kids rememeber where this one is coming from: Leland Stanford was not just a Robber Barron, he was the one who said "if it's not bolted down it's mine. and if it can be pried off, then it's not bolted down" so is it surprising that Stanford's Review would write this carelss and dangerous tripe? not really. They talk about how dealing with climate change will hurt the economy. then move on to how 'chemical contrails' (some may call 'em chemtrails) actually cool the planet and bring about global dimming. So, their brainiac solution? "A tempting solution: get some planes to spray clouds of particulate matter into the atmosphere and voilà; we cleverly average the effects of our pollutants. This could delay or prevent the financial loss associated with changing the very foundation of the world’s economic motor." Bahhumbug! (besides if you follow Kay Hucthinson's trail.. it's already happening like it or not)

Desalination! It's a huge thing really. And I have a lot to say about it (noooo I have a lot to say on something?? really! stop the presses!!). But not now--this is just a segue, a little story to introduce something that is going to be huge, but really we have to think about before jumping in feet first. Anyway at this point here's a glimmer of hope, not only for potable drinking water but maybe even for some peace on earth.....

"it's like Maguyver meets Mr. Wizard" (3min 40sec)
gove
This is a local news show from somewhere in Montana reacting to a 60 Minutes TV episode. And yet it still blows my mind, I mean it used to be that these issues would have never made it to camera. Let alone what's going on in Montana where the governor wants to turn coal into diesel to "get away from foreign oil" and the activists who are against it, for the most part would rather see biodiesel and other wind. Plus they use Montana's changing climate as a bumper. Times have changed...

Collapse! Live(74min 24sec)

This one is brought to you by the good folks at the Long Now foundation. It's a lecture! 75 minutes of Jared Diamond talking about his book "Collapse". This is what Grist had to say about his book: "Through a grab bag of case studies that range from the Mayan Empire to modern China, (Author Jared) Diamond tries to distill a unified theory about why societies fail or succeed. He identifies five factors that contribute to collapse: climate change, hostile neighbors, trade partners (that is, alternative sources of essential goods), environmental problems, and, finally, a society's response to its environmental problems. The first four may or may not prove significant in each society's demise, Diamond claims, but the fifth always does. The salient point, of course, is that a society's response to environmental problems is completely within its control, which is not always true of the other factors. In other words, as his subtitle puts it, a society can "choose to fail."

To The Moon!(2min 13sec)

OK, I've made fun of some of these lunatic climate modification/adaptation schemes in the past, but after watching this 2 minute vido, I'm not so sure anymore... I mean they have a good case, but also great 3d animation and cool visuals. I'm sold. (well maybe not sold) Gaia Sleene

THOM YORK(16min sec28)

This is a pretty strong little PSA. All kids no adults. Good to spread around the word... It's from fightglobalwarming.com who have lots of neat (non movie) things on their website!

...and while you're out passing links of little climate change flicks-- sure of course I'm much more into solution based stuff, but if there's anyone who needs convincing about whats happening, here's another little video (1min 34sec) it's all stats. 100% stats. good argument, but sticks to that. It's from the Climate Future group, who have a bunch of videos available online on their site... Great interviews with key climate people... They, like Thom York, and myself, claim that global warming is leading us into an Ice Age.

Shamans Of The Amazon(52min 17sec)

Last, but not least here's a goody. A real treat. An Excellent documentary about the Amazonian Shamans and their use of the sacred Ayahuasca vine to communicate with the Spirits of the Forest. Includes an interview with Terence Mckenna, criticism of cultural genocides, the corruption within large oil companies and governments, many civil rights issues.... and of course the guy making the documentary tries Ayahuasca

Robots building robots on the moon, a novel way to um, stop global warming?
moony
You know, way back when, I read a global-warming science fiction novel called Heat by Arthur Herzog (no Bruce Stirling, but hey, this was written in the 70's). I don't want to spoil the ending-- but oddly enough the solution his protagonist, the hero, ended up executing seems to be happening whether we like it or not. In the novel, the world ends up sending millions and millions of tiny mirrors into the upper atmosphere to reflect solar radiation away from the planet before it hits greenhouse gasses and starts to re-radiate. Kinda like what "they" say chemtrails are-- tiny particles of aluminum bouncing light away form those nasty GhGs.... In light of this catch-22 (whether we like it or not)I gotta say, I'm no longer thinking that the Brigadier General S. Peter Worden is crazy at all-- in fact I'm starting to think that what he wants to do might not only work, but compared to chemtrails, I love it. Well, kinda.

So what's the deal you ask? and why would i even think for a moment that the General is crazy? Well, he wants to set up robot colonies on the moon that will build billions (yeah, billions) of flying floating semi-opaque sun shades that would float 3 million miles away, between us and the sun. No, seriously, this is a picture of him delivering the speech (maybe one day called "the speech that launched a billion moon robots") back in October at the Space Frontier Conference in Los Angeles:
tothemoon
OK I'll be honest he is crazy-- but maybe just maybe crazy like a fox! He wants the private sector to run the show with the government sticking to what it does best, as he says, the "Roads and Commodes." He says that what we need is private ownership to really save the planet, private companies doing this sun-blocking (he uses the railroad robber barrons as an example of how private capital can work better-- see, he is crazy because he says nothing about their dirty dealings.)

((Ok, maybe you dont need my editorial here to see what this guy wants to do, so I'll leave the floor to the people who were in LA at the Space conference)):
continue this way, young space cowboys )

new weather modification bills ...for weather and "other" purposes [Nov. 4th, 2005|10:14 am]
[Tags|, , ]

funny ....you don't look evil!
Image hosted by TinyPic.com
Ladies and Gentlemen, meet U.S. Senator Kay Baily Hutchison (R. Tex). She's introduced a bill which in many ways will signal a major change in people's perception of the entire climate debate. The nice Senator has launched Bill S. 2170, THE WEATHER MODIFICATION RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION ACT.
chemie Much like Senator Mike Crapo's (his name, not what i think of his bill) Bill S-517 `Weather Modification Research and Technology Transfer Authorization Act of 2005'. I guess S-517 was tailored too much for business and not enough for evil or something...

It is high time that this was brought out into the open ...even though it's been illegal for 35 years it's pretty much 'common knowledge' (at least in the tin-foil hat community) that this has been going on unabated. And now, as for legitimacy, even the Senator has acknowledged that (and I quote);

"These efforts have been used in the U.S. for more than 50 years to reduce crop and property damage, optimize useable (sic) precipitation during growing seasons and lessen the impact of periodic, often severe droughts(ctd)..."
negachems
"....The weather modification projects in Texas and other States in the U.S. are much more than well considered responses to drought. They are trying to use the latest technological developments in the science to chemically squeeze more precipitation out of clouds. Moisture that is needed to replenish fresh-water supplies in aquifers and reservoirs." </quote>

So that's their plan for combating global warming. Wow. I guess when i look up at the sky and see a crosshatched series of Frankenclouds, i no longer have to worry about being paranoid-delusional, they are making the clouds!
scalar
Sheesh! that doesn't make me feel any better.... well maybe if y'all write a email or letter to Senator Hutchison, let her know what you think... i know i will

some highs that are really lows

...and I know a lot of relativeley sane, relativeley intelligent people just don't believe this is happening. (just dont believe their own eyes? or refuse to look up? who knows) but if you do go to the above linked link, you can go to their library and from there you can even download a copy of the 1992 Policy Implications for Global Warming where they looked for the best ways to deal with the coming greenhouse mess (and i quote):

"The report concludes that the most effective mitigation solution to global warming is to spray reflective aerosol compounds into the atmosphere via commercial, military and private aircraft." so, maybe it's unthinkable to the dood on the street, but not at all for policy wonks, NRC, NAS, NAE.....
chimique2
hmmm... come to think of it, i remeber reading a sci-fi book from the 70's called -i think- "Heat," and the protagonist in the story releases hundreds of thousands of little mirrors into space to refelct the solar radiation before we fry far below (oh, and to get the girl) ...sorta like Star Wars but for geo-engineering climate instead of knocking missiles out of the sky with light sabres
