MDI finds Indian love with TATA. Will finally manufacture theaircar! [Nov. 4th, 2007|02:00 pm]

No, not hot air. Compressed. C-o-m-p-r-e-s-s-e-...
mdicar
Woooooot! Well there you have it, once more, it pays to be persistent. At least that's how it's panning out for Guy Nègre who, as Green Car Congress just revealed has signed a manufacturing deal for his long awaited MDI Air Car. Yes! the silent car that gets about 125 Miles [at 70 MPH] on a tank of compressed air (and can fill back up in a couple of minutes). So Tata Motors, India's largest automotive manufacturer is going to start cranking these baddies out! And everybody says "Oh yeah!" ...Newly added, they are also going to be manufacturing a hybrid version that runs on gas and compressed air (gas to boost it at higher speeds, as well as to refill the air compression making road trips more doable).
And they don't just have the city cab version anymore, they got a sleek 21st century pickup truck now, and a family vehicle! I wonder if it is silent though, or if it sounds like a balloon slowly deflating (or a whoopee cushion?) Will have to wait and see, but so the question i am thinking is not so much when can i get my hands on a waycool EV, but more, in about 18 months which type of green car is going to be the one to get??

Florida Islander Invents Salt Water Fuel(?)

This article is a little high on claims and kinda light on details, but interesting none the less... it seems that a man in Florida was tinkering with some machines... from what i can tell he was playing around with some sort of Rife/Prioré/Clark frequency generators for cancer treatment (While that part may sound odd to you, check out those three links up there, it's really no different than an opera singer hitting the resonant frequency of crystal and shattering that -just a lot smaller...)

"Observing a bright blue flame, John Kanzius claims that it is salt water and salt water alone that is burning inside a test tube ....During his garage experiments Kanzius says he ignited plain old salt water with the same radio wave generator he was using in his cancer treatment." Wow. If this is true, the implications are huge!! read more: "Kanzius gave technicians at a Pennsylvania machine manufacturer a demonstration of his discovery. 'We saw it go up to 1500 degrees centigrade. That temperature, that's incredible,' exclaims a lab technician." And back shed or not-- this guy is not some backwoods invent, he's been using the flaming salt water to power a stirling engine, so obviously he knows a thing or two.... way to go Mr. Kanzius! This shows promise, and I hope to read about your name tree times for every one time i come across those stupid Steorn people :DD

Still open for business, free energy inventor Michael Brady decides to kill his July 7th show. And he was going to show this machine off to the world today!!!! Of course, he says, it works, and he is into showing potential investors...
peren
so go there, if you care and see his claims and boasts... I'm saying fagedaboutit ...I mean he cancelled the show not because people were trying to kill him (tho he claims that too) and of course not because it doesn't work. He cancelled the show because only 80 people bought the $200 tickets to see the thing.. and he needed 200 for some reason (where did that $16,000 go?) So all in all July 7th was going to be a big day in magnet mototrs and free energy, and its sadly turning into a same old same old.... sorry to inform y'all. Blech!

....and in other related news; look at this hot bridge i just bought on ebay! Sure i hope it is real, who doesn't? But I have to admit i'm skeptical---

Inventor Charles White is seeking funding for a revolutionary hydro-mechanical lever, which he has patented, which he claims could be used to generate clean power far in excess of the energy it consumes. it's basically a fancy hydrolic lever of sorts, and: "This engine would produce 100 units of power, while only five to 10 units would need to be diverted from a secondary source to get it going," Mr White said. "Since the engine doesn't need any fossil fuels, it doesn't emit any exhaust. It is pollution free.

Well, we can hope....

U of Arizona team building solar-powered wind towers [May. 22nd, 2006|08:50 am]
[Tags|, , ]

windtower
ok that might sound a little Babel-like, but they have been around for a while (one 600 ft tall tower in the 80's pumped out 50KW, and they're building a 160 ft one in Australia). The UA students have optimized the geometry, figured out efficiencies and reached a plateau where the power output (in relation to its size) is exponential! What they do is heat up the air to a few hundred degrees, and then the air shoots up the tower into the awating wind turbine. If the turbine wont go to the wind, i guess, move the wind to the turbine!

Over at ZPEnergy.com, Dr. Bernard Haish ((not a cook: Haish Ph.D. is an astrophysicist and author of over 130 scientific publications. He served as a scientific editor of the Astrophysical Journal for ten years, and was Principal Investigator on several NASA research projects)); on ZPE he writes; "My book "The God Theory: Universes, Zero-Point Fields and What's Behind It All" is now available at Amazon.com and other online bookstores." His new book discusses invisible multiverse s, deities and free energy machines. But still with a few tbsps of salt, halthy skepticism, research skills and some suspension of disbelief this may be a great read. Maybe Tom Hanks will star in it (but let's hope Ron Howard doesn't direct).

tidal power for the bay..... [May. 11th, 2006|04:02 am]

The Highs and Lows of the Fundy make good volts
BoFThe Bay of Fundy (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Maine) tides rise and fall higher and lower than anywhere on earth creating one of the richest marine ecosystems on the planet. Whales such as finback, minke, humpback and the extremely rare North Atlantic right whale congregate to feed their young, play and mate. But its that highest and lowest tide on the planet that got 8 parts of the bay listed in a landmark international study on tidal power by the Electric Power Research Institute, an independent, non-profit centre for electricity and environmental research based in California.

D.I.Y. Stirling Engine
stirling
No secret lotsa peeps love these External Combustion Engines. Sure, they've been around for 190 years now (invented by the Reverend Robert Stirling in 1816), and sow of course, making a huge comeback in the California deserts 9in a parabolic kinda way). So what are they exactly? Well, they heat and cool sealed gases (like 'air') and generate lots of energy from that heat. And you can see for yourself for about $5, with this free handy do it yourself plan ((and bonus point to anyone who figures out a way to mod these plans with a solar over)).

So, you'll need three tin cans, three aluminum cans (one's gotta be a big-boy can), a (knitting) pin, a pvc elbow, some epoxy and a tube or 'RTV gasket maker' mmkay? Then follow the instructions

Have fun!

Underwater Electric Kites (UEK)
UK
They're just like wind turbines, gas turbines, and hydroelectric turbines (mostly like hydro). Except that they sit underwater, need no dams, and produce cheap abundant electricity. 24/7. Ananpolis Maryland's UEKUS has a novel way to generate electricity from rivers and tides, and they call it the UEK. Apparently these Low impact hydrokinetic turbines can generate energy at between 1.8 and 2.8 cents per kW-h(!)

This is the crew submerging a set of UEKs

Now Trevor Hughes, President and CFO of ATEC Power Inc., announced this week that he is commencing pre-commercial testing of the UEKs in the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia. So these things are going to spead quickly!!

OK so you wanna go solar, and you already understand that solar panels are more expensive than batteries. But the bitter surprise may be that the Inverter will cost you about as much as your panels(!) That has traditionally been the case... but now, according to PhysOrg Magazine, Cuauhtemoc Rodriguez, a PhD student at the University of Cambridge, has come up with a new generation of cheaper and smaller inverters for solar panels which can be plugged into standard electricity sockets. No wonder he's the Millennium Prize winner! He deserves two for that!

So, it's true that parabolic solar thermal collectors are cool. And look like fun. But it's also true that they aren't perfect. In fact often, one has to manually re-focus the mirrors, you can get blinded by the intense light and they do start fires (think of an ant & magnifying glass to the power of 100).

In comes Barabus Energy who's new SunCone not only allays those aforementioned issues, but also makes a 90% efficient solar thermal collector that costs under $6,000. This is where the story gets interesting!

Lightworks and Gaiam Announce Home Video Partnership [Feb. 18th, 2006|09:40 am]
[Tags|, , ]

....but which Lightworks is that??
LW
Lightworks Program Distribution (LPD) just announced a new home video partnership with GT Media, Inc. (a subsidiary of mega-huge greenies Gaiam). This marks the company's first home video deal, and comes on the heels of the company's recent launch. Through the agreement, GT Media will have long term home video distribution of Lightworks Program Distribution's full catalogue of programming throughout North America. Lynn Powers, President and CEO, Gaiam, stated, "we are very excited to work with Lightworks Program Distribution. Their high-quality, values-driven programming is a perfect complement to our library of products that enlighten and enhance people's lives."

Now here's where it get's confusing. LPD is based in NYС and are purveyors of Faith & Values based media. Which kinda fits into the Gaiam fold, almost. What I am confused about is that there is the far superior and far more fitting LightWorks Audio & Video based on that crazy roller-beach in LA (Venus Beach?)You want videos on Alternative Healing? Alternative Energy? Dolphins? Gurus? Yoga? Tantra? Sacred Geometry? You ain't gonna find it over at LPD (who sell stuff like Joan of Ark, and "The American Creed")... so that's why I am confused... do you think Gaiam was confused as well and signed a deal with the wrong label? Well it's too bad that Lightworks (AV not LPD) wont be in Gaiams' ginormous distribution chain, I mean, they are everywhere, Borders, Chapters, Powell, Amazon, WalMart... it would be amazing if anyone and everyone had access to gems like these:

one more ethanol piece.... [Feb. 5th, 2006|08:00 am]
[Tags|, , , ]

three ethanol stories in a row then back to the madness....
govCanEth
's funny i used to not like ethanol, a lot. Especially the way megahuge agro- farm companies were sucking up government Pork to basically, well, to basically make more cash.... And when it's all made from corn, it goes from stupid and wasteful to evil (unless we have more food than we need, and no more 40,000 babies starving to death on the planet every day. Until then food turned into fuel is simply evil).

But now there's switchgrass, and as you will see below, a number of positive indicators that you can get more bang with ethanol than the lame corn based ethanol ever could... so that's pretty exciting. Now here's something that will make it even more exciting! it's called the "UW Madison Process" and here's the guy, Dr. George Huber:
drH
As is widely known, traditional ethanol production yields around 1.1 units of energy for every 1 that is put into the system. So sure, good reason to not like it very much...

But Dr. Huber and his colleagues at the University of Wisconsin in Madison (the midwest's version of Eugene OR), have found a way to double the output.

While its most likely going to be used as an additive for biodiesel, it shows great promise for ethanol as well; "It's a very efficient process," says Huber. "The fuel produced contains 90 percent of the energy found in the carbohydrate and hydrogen feed. If you look at a carbohydrate source such as corn, our new process has the potential to creates twice the energy as is created in using corn to make ethanol."

kinda neat, imnsho.... oh and hey, if you want to keep up to date with the whole biofuels issue, you might want to check out C. Scott Miller's BioconversionBlog. I didn't see much about the "UW-Madison Process" there but the guy is a bioconversion nut!

the definitive ethanol study [Feb. 5th, 2006|07:43 am]
[Tags|, , , ]

funnycar
It seems that the folks at UCBerkeley have decided to put their foot down when it comes to The ethanol debate. They just released the ERG Biofuel Analysis Meta-Model. So now we can even do the math ourselves! For years, ecologists and hippies have been saying that the way we're making ethanol is insane, taking pretty much one unit of gasoline energy to make anywhere from 1.1 to 1.2 units of ethanol energy. And while they may smell funny, the hippies had a good point (*although according to UCBerkeley, maybe not quite that gooda point). The study shows that many processes for making corn ethanol are not quite as wasteful as once deemed (though they still stink, pretty much. That';s a scientific term, basically they are still not that efficient).

But now there's a lot of change coming down the pipe. There's "cellulostic ethanol" made from pretty much any agricultural waste. And that gives us great yields.. and then, of course, there's Switchgrass which has even greater yields (this is in the report).

Thankfully, the report will hopefully put to rest the idea of using corn (or strawberries, eclaires, or any food) to make fuel. In terms of environmental impact corn ethanol decreases greenhouse gases only 14% when compared to gasoline, while cellulosic ethanol has a much greater reduction of 88%. Additionally they show that the net energy value (energy out-energy in) was calculated to be 4.5 MJ/liter for corn ethanol and 22.8 MJ/liter for switchgrass! So if you want to read in detail the work from the Berkeley researchers click away

...some folks would rather SWITCHgrass than fight! [Feb. 5th, 2006|06:51 am]

the hot new energy crop is as old as the buffaloes
swtchgrs
Switchgrass. You can't shake a stick these days and not hit some switchgrass. And while normally the president 'down there' is to blame for lots of questionable things, this time around he's to blame for everyone talking about switchgrass. And with the way the stuff grows, it will only be another few months before people um, switch from talking about it to actually doing some thing about it.

Switchgrass grows everywhere, and traditionally because it's so hardy and tough (and needs very little chemical care) it has been used by farmers on embankments and other places to control erosion. It grows like mad, 10 feet a year (and you don't have to re-seed it, cut it, and next year; another 10 feet!) It's also tough, unlike kentucky bluegrass or other soft lawn grasses, this stuff would tear your feet up if you were out dancing on it. But that hardiness makes it ideal for a number of energy schemes.

Yet more nanosolar advancements

Chemists at Italy's University of Bologna, UCLA and the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) have designed and constructed a molecular motor of nanometer size that does not consume fuels; their nano motor is powered only by sunlight. A nano motor can work continuously without any external interference, and operates without consuming or generating chemical fuels or waste.

“We design and make sunlight-powered nano motors and then ‘test drive’ them much as an engineer would a new motor car,” Fraser Stoddart (UCLA's Fred Kavli Professor of NanoSystems Sciences and CNSI Director) said. “It is as if we had managed to get a solar powered motor car onto the road and running.” (i love that image... heh heh)

Jeff Lieberman, MIT PhD student showed off this beaut recently, and posted about it on his website. he invented a lightbulb that gets its juice wirelessly... not only that, but as you can see, the lightbulb levitates(!) As he explains on his website (which has some groovy movies about the experiments); "Lightbulb explores two phenomena I find interesting, the stabilization of unstable systems using feedback, and wireless power transmission. Feedback systems often levitate objects, stabilize inverted pendulums, and the like. Wireless power transmission has been around since Tesla's invention a century ago, although it is still not widely utilized. I wanted to explore these effects together." I think it's a great first exploration! Check out the movies as the text is a little techy.... not only is this waykewl-- the implications of these experiments are far reaching....

Ok who can really tell, were Ponds and Fleishman scammers? Or, were they on the ball? And while I'm asking questions, why is it that whenever I google cold fusion all i see is "Ponds & Fleishman" what? Don't they have first names, or is it like "Simon & Garfunkle?" But anyway, ten years later, and there seems to be quite a few people into this, again.... Most notably the LenrCanr.org people (LENR, Low Energy Nuclear Reactions, also known as Cold Fusion, CANR, Chemically Assisted Nuclear Reactions).

And Lenrcanr (seriously, a few PRflacks ought to come up with a better acronym for these guys), despite having a goofy name, have some goodies to share with the world. First off, they have a short video (Win MediaPlaya only, srry), it's a 17 minute lecture from the International Congress on Nanotechnology in San Francisco, Calif. It's Steven Krivit asking and answering: "What Really Happened with Cold Fusion, and Why Is It Coming Back?"

They also have another neat goody for y'all: They posted an internal memo from Amoco circa 1990. It's about their own internal Cold Fusion research, where (and I'm just quoting the cover page here): "The latest cold fusion experiment run at the Tulsa Research Center documented anomalous energy production, as measured through careful calorimetry, and produced enhanced levels of tritium, an indication that a nuclear process is involved in the experiment". You can get the whole document from Lenrcanr in PDF form... It's interesting to note that it's Amoco-- and thank god that they now belong to BP.

Marine Current Technology and UK Minister of Energy christen new tech play

The rotors are 10 times slower than those on ships so you don't have to worry about no free Willies getting chopped up by the turbines. And all I can say is after years of waiting, it looks like we are finally going to see some tidal power! Wooo hooo!

So according to the BBC, the news last week was that Bristol based MCT and UK Minister Angela Smith announced that they are going to launch a commercial scale pilot project that will generate enough electricity for 800 homes (at a cost of +/-£4.5m)in the Strangford Narrows, County Down, Ireland. This is great! We've all been reading about these tidal energy plays for ages, but it's such heartening news to see that we're actually taking strides now! again alls i can say is Wooo Hooo!

Commander Tuttle speaks out from the Day Star! [Sep. 8th, 2005|07:11 am]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

about a week ago i wrote something about how there is almost no SoG-Si (solar grade silicon) available and it's causing quite a few problems in the PV Solar industry

...well one of the shinning "stars" out there is DayStar Technologies they make silicon free solar panels. Some of their products are simply amazing and a nice new change from PV Panels which haven't changed much since the 70's. So I was pleased as punch to read a letter DayStar CEO, John Tuttle (no, not Buttle) wrote this week to his investors (and you aren't one yet... after you read this you may well be)

Fully acknowledging the SoG-Si dearth, he point to how this is amazing for his company and products. He mentions a deal with the German solar park builder Blitzstrom GmbH for 30MW of panels, a Chinese company who is picking up 500Kw (that's +5000 panels), and they're ramping up their production facilities as well... planning on producing 100MW/yr in their "Gen-III plant" (?)

Great news all around! Something to be happy about.... and we have this guy, John Tuttle to thank (no not the political looking guy in red tie, the happy guy), Thank you commander Tuttle of the DayStar!

this just in!! yet one more waste fed fuel cell is underway
i just received this news-release a few hours ago... and after the last post i felt it necessary to show that this isn't just happening down on the farm, it's happening everywhere.... In Japan they are going to be using this thing:
babyFC
Which BTW is the smallest unit made by FuelCell Energy of Danbury Ct,
their biggest looks like this:
threeMegs Anyway, the 250Kw unit is going to be powering a hospital, a school and an apartment building in a city on Japan's west coast. And the unit is going to be fed waste from a food processing plant! It reminds me of "Back to the Future" when the Doc comes back from the future and needs garbage to feed his DeLorean-- Read more... )
