greenies feeling the love at city hall
   Last night was the 2nd Annual Green Toronto Awards. The event was held at city hall, packed to the rafters, and brimming with so much charged energy that you might have thought at some point that that funny building was actually going to take off and fly!
 (it does look a little like a flying saucer). Anyway, this was a beautiful event! From the opening invite-only cocktails before the show, to the actual (open to the public) ceremony, green entrepreneurs and activists were rubbing elbows with city officials and the odd nosey eavesdropping blogger...
And I'm not kidding when i say that something was in the air. It was electric! And a big part of the charge was the congregation of business people --Green Business people-- who are visibly succeeding in their own uphill battles getting sustainability to market, and to the hearts of our citizenry. Sara Harmer graced us with her song "Escarpment Blues," and media matron Ann Rhomer brought tears to many eyes, reminding people that it was one year ago to the day that Toronto Green Legend Bob Hunter lost his battle with cancer. Hunter, one of the original founders of Greenpeace brought a human face and heart to ecological consciousness to all Torontonians daily as his role as a breakfast pundit, appearing on TV in his bathrobe every morning discussing daily events, while never giving up on his eco concerns. Bob got a posthumous round of applause, everyone in the house knowing how proud he would have been of us, and the green scene which has grown so wide and healthy! A beautiful night, celebrating both community and business initiatives!

| ExPan's 2nd annual green video festival!! |
[Apr. 17th, 2006|12:39 pm] |
I guess, since i decided to leak a little news to the friends here (sorry public peeps, get an lj), I am feeling like it's time to give something out on the braodercast so yes, it's time for another Exuberant Pantaphobia Mini-EcoVideo Festival So maybe you want to reread this at a later time, because within this post, there will be links to a couple of hours of movies! Most clips are short but there are a few gems that are worth spending the hour or two to watch (hint hint...) But for now, here's what you will find in the first installment:
EcoFashion on the catwalk(1min 47sec);
 OK we start of with something nice, fast, and that everyone can enjoy. A quickie video shot at a Deborah Lundquist Fashion Show. She has made quite a name for herself creating amazing clothes from recycled materials.
BikeLane Liberation (4min 51sec);
 ...another quickie, but oh soooo colourful! This is a video from the Time's UP! org (NYC direct action on the environment). Watch here as they "clown around" and get the message our about "Bike Lane Liberation."
Green Media Roundtable (57 minute);
 Experts (including Richard Hutton, producer of Strange Days on Planet Earth, and RX for Survival), talking about green media at a UC SantaBarbara eco roundtable. Some interesting quotes and some well thought out glimpses into our particular niche in media i.e. green videos and films. "Unless you take a multimedia approach where you scare, tie them in, and then catalyze them to do stuff in anther way (go into the backyard, read a book, go online and do green work, it's dangerous to think that this media can do more than it can do"... and; where's our mushroom-cloud logo for climate change "iconic modes of communication"? ..and "if you don't have the human story (like erin brokovitch) you have to have the cataclysm (like 'the day after tommrrow'...). Hear the experts answer audience questions and chat about a subject we love so much...
Wildlife Creations ((2min 2sec);
 Patrick Palumbow shows off & talks about his ingenious recycled tire horse-swings.
Vandan Shiva; Listen to your Mother!(51min 33sec);
 Last BUT NOT LEAST is a lecture given by the eloquent and brilliant Indian Economist/WorldChanger, Vandana Shiva. in this Mother's Day address, she gets into on of her cause celebres, colonialization and Terminator seeds, the historicity, widened perspective, and love that emanates from this woman is amazing. No camera work at all, but riveting! |

69 North's Climate Change Arts & Humantities Expedition
 I just heard that this Norwegian Sailing school, 69North is about to set on an amazing journey. Just had to share it with y'all. I don't know the name, yet, but it's a unique sailing expedition thats for sure! It's to focus attention on global warming through the arts and humanities. Gotta love that, I mean what, leave mindset-changing to climate change debate?
69 North leaves Tromso, Norway next May (not the one in 2 weeks), to sail through the Northwest Passage, Bering Strait, Panama Canal, and back to Tromso a year later. The expedition will include educational sessions in major ports of call in Canada, US, Mexico and Central America exploring the role the humanities can play in helping to understand climate change. Am really curious to see how this comes together... ( Read more... ) |

78th Oscars, but 4th for the ecoSWAGG....
 I was all curious about this group after GreenLAGirl said that she just busted some tickets to their Oscar night soiree... So, delving a little deeper i see that Global Green aren't just putting up the ritz, but splaying the green all over town! even their lootbags are green. Or, especially the bags...
ecoSWAGG bags, benefiting Global Green USA, may be the least expensive goodie bag to be gotten, but there's nothing little about it. The earth-conscious gift bag carries with it a BIG message about healthy environmental practices. For the fourth year in a row, as part of the "Red Carpet, Green Cars" drive-up campaign, ecoSWAGG (which stands for Sustainability, Wellness and Green Gifts) will be personally delivered into the arms of nominees and attendees chauffeured in Toyota and Lexus hybrids to the 78th Annual Academy Awards.
Like no other swag bag, ecoSWAGG proves that going green isn't just easy, it's fun, fashionable and hip. Approximate retail value of the ecoSWAGG bag is between four and five thousand dollars, a small figure when compared with that of the official Oscar(R) bag, which last year was valued at more than $100,000. But the "Toyota vehicle ecoSWAGG" includes: The Ambrose Hotel in Santa Monica; Arbor Snowboard Company graphic designed bamboo tees; Biota Spring Water, packaged in biodegradable bottles; Ecco Bella chocolates, lipstick and lotion; Ecoganik organic couture clothiers; Edun organic cotton T-shirts; Frog's Leap organic cabernet wine; Loomstate organic denim; Island Press, publishers of Cities in the Wilderness; New Belgium's 100% wind-brewed Fat Tire Ale; Napapijri Geographic fleece outerwear; Shift eco-fashion magazine; Solar Style solar cell phone chargers; Toyota Motor Sales branded solar iPod(R) charges; and The Villages of Loreto Bay, Baja Mexican eco-resort. Lexus vehicle ecoSWAGG will also include a commemorative Red Carpet, Green Cars Pampaloni decanter.
Well, that's gotta be at least as much fun as attending the Oscars in the first place, no? |

| Cool Drivers |
[Feb. 24th, 2006|07:35 pm] |
Hey! Wanna stop 1,000 lbs of CO2 from getting into the air every month? Then read on...
 Clean Air Cool Planet is at it again! They've started a new campaign called coolDriver and it looks like one of those trends that will just build and build... They say it's a way to make your car "carbon neutral" (now who doesn't want that?)
How does it work? CoolDriver step #1: Sign up with CoolDriver CoolDriver step #2: drive no more than you need to, keep your tires properly inflated, and try to use efficient vehicles to get where you need to go. CoolDriver step #3: “offset” the carbon dioxide from your driving, so your driving will have a net-zero impact on global warming! So, you end up building new renewable energy sources, like new wind farms and farm-methane projects... Oh! And they send you a tub of Ben & Jerry's Ice cream as a way of saying thanks! So what are you waiting for? If you drive a car, click it out! |

| the party's just begun! |
[Dec. 21st, 2005|11:15 pm] |
 I think David Suzuki started something big ...sure there's Bob Geldoff and all, but i really think that Suzuki started a great trend. Sure it's great to have a big festi for 'ending poverty' and over here we even had a big party for that weird SARS disease.. but the Suz-- he decided to throw a party in Montreal back when all those UN delegates were in town.. called TooHot2Handle he gathered together various artists like eric KidKoala San and the stills and held a bash to just raise the intensity... and now the ball rolls and picks up steam. and now, Climate Change Now! is launching a huge huge mega fest in Cardiff (UK) next month, Jan 28th, and its all about the Cch!
 As you can tell from the above pic, obviously the super furry animals are slated to play, as are NYC dahlings The Strokes and those i-don't-know-is-it-irony? playas, The Darkness. So far, most likely the roster will be growing and growing... |
